How To Protect Your Diamonds During The Winter Season

If you’re a lover of diamond jewelry (and who isn’t?), you’ll understand how important it is to take care of it, all year long. While keeping diamonds clean and protected is a year-round process, winter comes with some extra things to take into consideration. Want to learn how to protect your diamonds during winter? Here are our top tips for keeping your diamond jewelry safe and beautiful during the chilly wintertime.

Protect Yourself From Losing Your Diamond Rings

If you wear rings during the winter (including your diamond engagement ring), it’s important to think about how the fit of rings may change in the winter. When it’s cold outside, our fingers constrict and become slightly smaller. If your ring is on the looser side, or even if it fits perfectly in the summer, it may be more prone to slipping off during the winter.

So what can you do to keep your rings secure during the winter? One solution is to consider getting a ring guard. Ring guards are pieces of specially designed material (usually plastic or string) that can be added to the base of your ring to ensure a closer fit. These are generally very affordable and a great way to keep your ring fitting snugly. You could also try keeping your ring in place with another, smaller ring. If you wear a second band that fits tightly against the outside of your looser ring, it will ensure that you’ll be safe from slippage.

Don’t Take Your Diamond Rings On Outdoor Adventures

This tip goes hand in hand with our last one: don’t risk losing valuable jewelry when you’re exploring the great outdoors during the winter. Because your hands will be especially cold in any snowy weather, your fingers will become especially slim. Don’t risk losing a precious ring on the ski slopes— store your valuable diamond jewelry safely indoors before you hit the ski lift.

Watch Out For Sweater Weather

Everyone loves wearing soft, knitted sweaters in the wintertime. But adorable knits don’t always pair well with fine jewelry. When you’re getting dressed this winter, remember that knits are easily snagged on diamonds, prongs, and other raised metals. This could lead to the ruin of a favorite sweater or, worse, it could help a loose ring slip off. But you don’t have to totally skip the knits this winter— it’s just important that you be mindful of the mishaps that could happen so you can avoid them.

Keep It Clean

This last tip is a year-round one that remains very important during the winter: keep your diamond jewelry clean. Over time, dirt and grime can build up on jewelry, making it seem dimmer and less beautiful. To help stop this build up, it’s important to clean your jewelry regularly. A good rule of thumb is to clean your jewelry each month. You can do this at home by making a baking soda and water paste, then use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub your fine jewelry with the paste. (Pro tip: remember to always rinse your jewelry well with water before scrubbing— softer metals like gold can be scratched by some of the compounds in dirt.)

Keeping your diamond jewelry clean during the winter will help ensure that your precious pieces shine brightly all year long.
